But, what stood out during this time was the metal speculum being used during all my exams.
After researching about the metal speculum used during these exams, I learned it was invented in the 1800s by Dr. Marion Simms – a man who performed exams on enslaved women. And the plastic one that many clinicians use is not modern either – it was invented almost 50 years ago.
I found it to be quite insulting that today, in 2023, we are surrounded by so much innovation, and the speculum has never been modernized – and, that is when i made it my mission to develop a speculum for all women that was based on comfort.
